Discover Open Canoe - Lakes & Rivers

Escape to the Lake District and immerse yourself in a full weekend of open canoeing with us.  A true weekend of discovery developing new paddling skills, making friends and enjoying adventures by boat!

Itinerary

Arrival Day – Arrive at Calvert Lakes any time after 4:00pm. Dinner is served at 6:00pm which is a great opportunity to meet all the members of your team and the group instructor. After dinner take a dip in the hydrotherapy pool or unwind in the Games Room with your group.

Day 1 – Today will be spent down at the boathouse on the shores of Bassenthwaite Lake. Once kitted up, we’ll start the day with some basic paddle skills on the lake. As we get more confident, we’ll take a short paddle along the lake.  Back to the boathouse for a bite of lunch followed by an afternoon of exploration on Bassenthwaite Lake practising the skills you have just learnt.

Day 2 – After breakfast we’ll load the open canoes onto the trailer and venture away from the centre to start our day of exploration on Derwentwater.  On our canoe journey we have plenty of time to discover quiet bays, small islands, observe wildlife and take in the mountain views.  There may even be the opportunity to paddle down the River Derwent and wind our way down into the expanse of Bassenthwaite!

Departure Day – Depart after breakfast on Monday morning

All activities are weather dependant, and the instructor may adjust the schedule as needed based on the group’s abilities and conditions on the day.  If the weather is unsuitable for water-based activities, a suitable outdoor activity will be offered as an alternative.

Who’s it suited to?

Our discover open canoe weekend is suited to people of all abilities. We have a range of portable hoists and adaptive seating to ensure everyone is comfortable in a boat. The instructors encourage everyone to participate, whether that’s giving directions, using a paddle, or just enjoying the experience, having fun, and maybe a little splash along the way.  We will discuss your requirements at the point of booking to ensure you are booked onto the discover weekend that is best for you.
