Almost all our guests get the chance to go out on the water. Whether canoeing or sailing, kayaking or paddleboarding, Bassenthwaite Lake is a wonderful place to find adventures.

Canoeing at Calvert Lakes is often enjoyed in open Canadian canoes. These crafts can seat up to 6 people each. We lash the canoes together to make rafts that are more stable to reduce the risk of falling into the water. All participants are kitted out with buoyancy aids and waterproofs, and our expert team of instructors are on hand to support and encourage throughout. Our unique facilities ensure people of all abilities can experience the thrill of water sports when visiting us.

As with all our activities, we adapt canoeing to suit the needs of a group. Confident paddlers might prefer to spend the day on the water, in which case we’ll try some fun paddling challenges or head out on a longer expedition. Groups with mixed abilities or less ambulant guests will spend time in the shallows, practicing paddling, getting comfortable and gaining confidence before heading out into open water, if they want.

The sensation of being on the water is magical for all ages and abilities – the sounds of the waves, the feeling of the wind, the scenery. Together they create a sensory experience that doesn’t require mobility to enjoy.

We have a range of seating from fully supportive whole body, to beanbag and just a little back support. We also offer a range of paddles, grip aids and cushions, ensuring everyone can participate in comfort, whether they need hoisting onto the boat, a little support or are fully independent.

Canoeing is one of our most inclusive adventure activities and we love getting new guests onto the water for the first time. Experiencing the mountains and woodland from the water offers a unique opportunity to observe the stunning Lake District from a completely different point of view.
