Experience the sensation of swinging

Indoor swings at Calvert Lakes

Although most of our adventure activities take place outdoors, our indoor sports hall is equipped with all kinds of fun activities. A particular highlight are our indoor swings. Using ropes and harnesses, children and adults of all abilities can experience the sensation of moving through the air.

Our swing can be used like a traditional rope swing with a seat for the participant and someone pushing from behind. There’s also a little swivel swing which can stay low and spin around, which is ideal for smaller, less confident people or those with a fear of heights. We have all sorts of seats too, so wheelchair users or those who need postural support can experience the thrilling sensation of swinging.

Affectionately called the king swing, our ceiling rope swing works on a pulley system. Guests can winch themselves up to the ceiling 9m off the group, or group members can assist with the hoisting. There is a release cord which when pulled sets off a pendulum motion that swings the participant across the room.

For chair users in particular, our indoor sensory swing is a highlight. Not only does it mean they can spend time out of their chair, but participants can be as involved in the hoisting as they want. Feeling that drop in the stomach and the whoosh of air on release creates an adrenaline spike as dopamine rush through the body.

Sensory swings build confidence in a safe environment where risk is carefully managed, and the experience can be tailored to the needs of every individual.

The king swing is usually enjoyed as part of a rock and rope activity session. Every session looks different, depending on the preferences and abilities of the group, but everyone can benefit from the rush of swinging. It’s also one of the noisiest activities and guaranteed to elicit swings from at least one person! Ear defenders might be required for those averse to loud noises.

Indoor swing FAQs

Who can enjoy roped swinging?

Anyone can enjoy the experience of a sensory swing, including chair users. We can also rig the swing to wheelchairs, if guests prefer to stay in their chair.

Swinging is both exciting and relaxing. The repetitive motion of dropping and climbing is great for reducing stress and encouraging focus.

Both adults and children can take part in roped swinging at Calvert Lakes, and the level of ‘risk’ can be adapted to each individual.

The king swing and ceiling swings are in our indoor sports hall. The sports hall has level access, a wide doorway and a spectating area where guests can watch their group before getting involved. In the sports hall there is also an adjustable climbing wall, basketball hoops, curling, abseiling and we often do ice breakers and team challenges in here too.

A rock and rope session is usually a half day activity and takes around 2 hours, depending on which activities are chosen. At the start of the session, guests will be kitted out with harnesses and helmets before taking part various challenges.

The king swing and indoor swing might be enjoyed in conjunction with indoor climbing, abseiling or other simultaneous activities in the sports hall.

With all activities we work with the needs of each individual group to ensure maximum enjoyment and benefit for all.

Funding for adventure breaks

We’re committed to making our activity breaks accessible to as many people as possible, which is why limited bursary funding is available to help reduce the cost. Because our funding is often restricted, we prioritise those who’d most benefit from financial assistance. While we cannot guarantee support for every enquiry, we encourage anyone facing financial barriers to get in touch. Our team is here to guide you through the process and help you explore the options available.
