Wheelchair challenge course

A fun course for all ages and abilities

Outdoor wheelchair challenge course at Calvert Lakes

Above Calvert Lakes, nestled in the trees, we have a fun and challenging wheelchair assault course. Although it was designed with chair users in mind, this course can be used by wobbly walkers, small children and adults alike.

Made up of different obstacles, our wheelchair challenge course is an alternative roped activity usually enjoyed as part of a rock and rope session. For groups with wheelchair users, this activity provides a dynamic way to traverse obstacles and experience the thrill of height from within a chair.

Described by some as a sort of wheelchair roller coaster, participants start at the bottom of the course and work their way to the top up a gentle incline, fully supported by a harness and rope system attached to a support rail above.

With 8 different sections to complete, the challenge course includes wobbly bridges, a seesaw, a parallel rail bridge, a covered dark section, a rope pull section and skateboard tug of war. Guests can either self-propel through the course, with or without support, or they can clip in and be pushed and/or pulled across the various sections.

We believe that everyone should have access to outdoor adventure activities and our wheelchair course is unique. With different options to suit people’s needs, this activity builds confidence and strength through adaptable challenge levels.

Wheelchair challenge FAQs

Who can enjoy the wheelchair challenge course?

The wheelchair skills course is great for chair users, especially those who’d rather stay in their chair. It can also be enjoyed by occasional chair users who are wobbly on their feet and younger participants who are too small for the high ropes course. Ambulant users can also participate as an alternative to the high ropes course.

As an activity that can be enjoyed individually or with one or two others, the wheelchair challenge course is popular with those with a wide range of needs.

The wheelchair assault course is behind and above the centre in amongst the trees. There is an uphill path to reach the course which is steep in places. Our instructors can help chair users, and the group may get involved with helping pull or push those who need support.

Usually occurring as part of a rock and rope session, the wheelchair challenge course is a half day activity and takes around 2 hours for a group to complete.

Funding for adventure breaks

We’re committed to making our activity breaks accessible to as many people as possible, which is why limited bursary funding is available to help reduce the cost. Because our funding is often restricted, we prioritise those who’d most benefit from financial assistance. While we cannot guarantee support for every enquiry, we encourage anyone facing financial barriers to get in touch. Our team is here to guide you through the process and help you explore the options available.
