Our Lake District Calvert Trust Riding Centre, an RDA (Riding for the Disabled Association) stables is marking its 50th anniversary in 2026, celebrating five decades of providing life-changing experiences for people of all abilities, ages and experience.
Since our founding in 1976, Calvert Stables has supported thousands of children and adults, offering opportunities to build confidence, improve physical wellbeing and experience the joy of ponies. The milestone year will be marked with a series of special events, bringing together riders, volunteers, supporters and the wider community.
As part of the celebrations, we’ll be hosting an Open Day in May, inviting visitors to see the facilities, meet the horses and dedicated volunteers, and learn more about the impact of our work. Guests will also have the chance to watch demonstrations, take part in games and quizzes, and explore opportunities to get involved.
Lou Hogan, Stables Manager, said:
“We’re incredibly proud to be celebrating 50 years of accessible and inclusive riding. This milestone is a testament to the passion and commitment of our volunteers, the generosity of our supporters, and most importantly, the determination and achievements of our community. We’re excited to welcome everyone to our Open Day and share what makes this place so special.”
The Open Day is open to all, including families, potential volunteers and anyone interested in supporting the Lake District Calvert Trust, of which the Stables is part. This event follows a recent Open Day at Calvert Lakes, our accessible activity centre just north of Keswick, where 200 people came together to celebrate our golden anniversary.
For 50 years, the Stables has been a place where barriers are broken down and confidence is built, one session at a time. Our birthday celebrations offer a chance to reflect on that legacy while looking ahead to the future.
