Martin’s Story

Martin Mullen is our current Chair of Trustees and has been supporting Calvert for 10 years. Our trustees support the Lake District Calvert Trust with vital governance, oversight and strategic planning to ensure our next 50 years are as successful as the last half decade!

Q: How did you first get involved with the Lake District Calvert Trust?

As a trustee, attended my first meeting in November 2016.

Q: What do you love most about being a trustee?

I thoroughly enjoy the energy, enthusiasm and the talent of the LDCT team. The spirit and tenacity which leads to the unique can-do Calvert attitude is a privilege to observe.

Q: What impact have you seen your governance have on our charity?

In my quieter moments I would like to think i have helped steer the charity through some choppy waters including COVID-19.

Q: Is there a team member, volunteer or guest who has particularly inspired you? And why?

I think it would be wrong for me to single out any individual but what does inspire me is the smile factory. The team at Calvert Lakes have an indomitable spirit even when the rain is pouring down and they have the ability to turn a tough day into memories that will last a lifetime with constant smiles.

Q: What has surprised you most about the role?

There are two aspects that have surprised me. Firstly, I am amazed by the impact Calvert Lakes has on so many people, it truly is life changing for our guests. Secondly, in terms of the role specifically, I have been surprised by the amount of overlap with my professional past and the openness of team who accept challenge, input and even occasional disagreement so graciously.

Q: Has working with Calvert changed you personally or professionally?

I think it has reminded me of how fortunate I am to be able to experience the outdoors in Cumbria so readily and it has reinforced my awareness that not everyone wants a professional life where every achievement can be beaten or surpassed. Constant stretch isn’t for everyone.

Q: What makes Calvert such a special place to support?

The IMPACT.

Q: What would you say to anyone thinking about working or volunteering here?

Try it. Have an open mind. Be patient and listen before answering.

Q: Can you describe Calvert in 5 words or less.

SMILE FACTORY
