Reach new heights with outdoor rock climbing
Climbing is enjoyed at Calvert as part of a rock and rope session, and every session will look different, depending on the needs of an activity group. Mixed ability groups might try indoor climbing and spend time in our sports hall on the climbing wall, abseiling, swinging or bouldering.
More ambulant groups, or groups that have visited before, might prefer to head out into the wider Lake District for a new challenge. We have two great locations just a short drive from the centre – St. Johns in the Vale and Sandale.
St. John’s in the Vale is southeast of Calvert and offers easier rock walls for first time climbers. There are challenging routes too, for more adventurous participants. Views across the northern Lakes are particularly picturesque from here.
At Sandale, north of the centre, Head End Quarry offers an alternative location with a dramatic rock wall that stretches for around 140 feet and boasts views across the Solway Firth and into Scotland.
We have specialist equipment to help wheelchair users, and those with limited mobility, abseil down these crags instead of climbing up them.
Climbing looks different for everybody. We have a range of climbing aids and harnesses to make climbing as inclusive as possible. Those with reduced mobility can try abseiling outdoors instead of climbing, for example. Climbers with limited mobility can be winched by their peers and still experience height gain too.
We strive to adapt our activities so people of all abilities can try something new. Safety is of the utmost importance, and we’ll always create bespoke activity programmes based on the ability of the group that are challenging, fun and inclusive for everyone.
“The activities were well planned, and both staff and children felt safe and well supported throughout. The instructors showed excellent knowledge of each activity and were able to explain clearly what would happen, including all safety procedures.
They used humour and encouragement to help children feel confident and excited about taking part, creating a positive and engaging atmosphere.”
Outdoor climbing is usually enjoyed by participants with a good level of mobility. Chair users or less ambulant guests might prefer abseiling, swinging or the zip wire instead but we’ll always strive to ensure all participants have a meaningful experience.
While it’s possible for less mobile guests to try outdoor climbing or abseiling, the requirements of the whole group need to be taken into consideration when planning appropriate inclusive activities.
We’ll also plan in consultation with you so that everyone in an activity group can get the most out of a session.
St. Johns in the Vale is south of Threlkeld, east of Keswick and north of Thirlmere. It’s a small collection of climbing crags approximately 15 minutes’ drive away from the centre.
Sandale is north of the centre and offers a long quarry wall for outdoor climbing approximately 20 minutes’ drive away from the centre.
There are other locations nearby for outdoor climbing too but these are the most popular and offer a variety of routes for all levels of confidence.
An outdoor rock climbing session can be a half-day session or made into a full day excursion for groups, as preferred.
If we’re spending a full day away from the centre, we may take pack lunches and we can combine climbing with a Lakeland walk, cycling or other off-site activities for an adventure filled day out in the Lakes.
We’re committed to making our activity breaks accessible to as many people as possible, which is why limited bursary funding is available to help reduce the cost. Because our funding is often restricted, we prioritise those who’d most benefit from financial assistance. While we cannot guarantee support for every enquiry, we encourage anyone facing financial barriers to get in touch. Our team is here to guide you through the process and help you explore the options available.
