Carriage driving breaks

An inclusive alternative to horse riding

Carriage driving at Calvert

Experience our accessible horse carriage driving breaks. You will learn how to drive a fully accessible carriage on our purpose-built driving track. There will also be time to get to know your horse, learn how to groom, how much to feed, how to put tack on and maybe give a soothing massage after you have ridden.

It is well-established that simply being in the company of horses is a rewarding experience providing a boost to emotional well-being and mental health.

Carriage driving allows one participant to accompany a member of our team on a carriage drive around our special track around a field adjacent to our stables. To ensure our ponies are pulling safe loads, there is a weight limit for drivers of 15 stone.

Carriage driving breaks FAQs

Please note, there is a weight limit for carriage driving of 15 stone, (210lbs or 95kg)  including the weight of a wheelchair, if used. Electric powered wheelchairs are not permitted on the carriage, but a supportive manual wheelchair can be provided, if needed.

Who can enjoy carriage driving?

Carriage driving is a great alternative to horse riding. Ideal for wheelchair users or those over 12 stone, carriage driving allows people to spend time with the ponies, without needing to ride.

The minimum requirement is that ambulant drivers can reach the footpad in the carriage.

Yes, of course! We encourage all participants to take the reins although some might need more support with this than others. As ever, we focus on what you can do, to make sure everyone has an enjoyable experience.

There is only space in our carriages for one driver and one member of staff. This is to ensure the load remains safe and sustainable for our ponies. Friends, family members or carers are welcome to walk around the track with the carriage and driver as the pace is slow enough to follow on foot.
