Calvert Lakes combats cost-of-living crisis

Calvert Lakes is combatting the cost-of-living crisis with a range of new initiatives. The centre is offering 25% off all in-inclusive, multi-activity breaks for the next four months as it addresses the financial pressures its visitors face.

The promotion, which runs from 1 November 2023 until 29 February 2024 and applies to all new bookings, is available to guests if one person in their group – adult or child – is disabled.  Research earlier this year by Calvert Lakes indicated that 55% of disabled people are abandoning plans for outdoor activity breaks due to the cost-of-living crisis – at a huge cost to their physical and mental health.

“If disabled people cut back on much-needed breaks in the great outdoors due to financial pressures their physical and mental health will suffer,” said Sean Day, Chief Executive at the Lake District Calvert Trust.  “Our aim is to stop that from happening and we very much hope our discounted packages will help.   Prices at the centre are all-inclusive as well as being subsidised by our own fund-raising efforts. We are also hugely grateful to generous benefactors who enable us to provide bursary funding.”

Earlier this year, Calvert Lakes launched the UK’s most comprehensive programme of activities for people with disabilities.  Activities at the residential-centre include abseiling, bushcraft, canoeing, climbing, cycling, high ropes, horse and carriage riding, orienteering, sailing, swimming and zip wire.  Courses are available to people of all ages with sensory, learning or physical disabilities, including those with the most complex needs for which most outdoor centres cannot cater.

Over the winter months, the centre’s outdoor activities will be complemented by a range of indoor offerings including swimming, climbing and archery.

Added Sean Day:
“As a charity we face our own financial pressures but we are determined to make residential breaks at Calvert Lakes as affordable as we possibly can.   The winter months are also a great time of year to visit the Lake District with snow-capped fells, crisp air and a quieter, slower pace.”

The 25% discount applies to all new bookings made from Monday 9 October onwards.  It does not apply to taster and themed weekends.
