Lake District Calvert Trust confirms closure of Calvert Reconnections service in Keswick

Calvert Lakes and Calvert Stables to Remain Open

The Lake District Calvert Trust can confirm the closure of its 10-bed acquired brain injury rehabilitation unit in Keswick (known as ‘Calvert Reconnections’).   The other centres (Calvert Lakes and Calvert Stables) will continue to operate as normal.

Unfortunately, Calvert Reconnections has not attracted enough clients on a consistent basis to make it financially sustainable for the charity.  The planned opening and establishment of Calvert Reconnections in 2020 was severely impacted by the pandemic.  Since it opened, the centre has suffered from volatility in numbers of participant bookings, and, since March 2024 there has been a significant reduction in occupancy.

Said Sean Day, Chief Executive at the Lake District Calvert Trust:
“Following a period of consultation, it is my sad duty to confirm that Calvert Reconnections has closed.  We were unable to find an alternative way forward with our existing operation, and there were no partners found to take over the service.  The last participants have now left the service, and the centre has closed its doors.

“Despite recent events, we remain so proud of Calvert Reconnections.  I’d particularly like to recognise the incredible effort that went into creating and running our innovative ABI rehabilitation service.    An inspired group of people worked tirelessly for nearly 10 years to make Reconnections a reality.   When the centre was open it changed many people’s lives – our clinical outcomes report is evidence of that.  Supporters have contacted us to say how sad they are – past beneficiaries, case managers and solicitors.  They all recognise that we created something special, and are as disappointed as we are that the service was not financially sustainable.”

Added Sean Day:
“The Trustees and leadership team have taken some painful decisions in the last couple of months to ensure the viability and sustainability of the Lake District Calvert Trust for many years to come.”
