Growing up in Viano do Castelo, Portugal, Nuno Malo was an active member of his local athletics club. Now the 43-year-old Penrith resident is revisiting his childhood as he trains for a series of fundraising runs in aid of the Lake District Calvert Trust.
Nuno moved to the UK with his Madeira-born wife Barbara in 2007. The couple, who have 4 children first settled in Manchester, before moving to Penrith in 2015.
Nuno’s fundraising for the Lake District Calvert Trust will see him take part in Scotland’s Ultra Tour of Arran, a two-day event covering 60 miles, before lining up in his first London Marathon three weeks later. Later in the year, he will also compete in the Scafell Pike Trail Marathon.
As his training gears up, Nuno recently re-joined his boyhood athletics club – Clube the Atletismo Olimpico Vianense – where he has teamed with his former trainer Mario Cunha.
“Mario sends over my training programme every Sunday and it’s bringing back a lot of happy memories,” said Nuno.
Nuno recently visited Calvert Lakes and was “blown away” by the centre and how it challenges disability through outdoor adventure.
“After a long time of running for my own benefit, I’ve decided to start running in support of others,” added Nuno. “On my recent visit to Calvert Lakes I was so impressed. The facilities, and the opportunities the charity provides, are second to none.
“Without fundraising, Calvert Lakes would struggle – and this means families and children would struggle as well.”
