New Year's Day Dip FAQs

What is the New Year's Day Dip?

The New Year’s Day Dip is a fundraising event organised by Calvert Lakes. We invite visitors and locals to take a short dip in Derwentwater on the first day of a new year for charity.

The New Year’s Day Dip takes place on January 1st each year. Unless the conditions are unsafe, the event will go ahead on the first day of every new year.

This is a free event although we organise it to raise funds for the Lake District Calvert Trust.

Registration is recommended as we have limited places available. We invite attendees to make a donation to our charity to support the life-changing experiences we provide for people with disabilities.

It is possible to turn up on the day, but we cannot guarantee you’ll be able to dip with us if we reach our maximum allowed attendees.

The New Year’s Day Dip takes place in Derwentwater, near Keswick.

At a spot known as ‘beyond the boat landings’, we enter the water in waves of 50 people at a time.

Parking is available at the Lakeside Car Park in Keswick. Follow Lake Road past Theatre by the Lake to find the area where we enter the water.

Fancy dress is not mandatory but encouraged! We’ve welcomed people in festive fancy dress, swimwear, wetsuits, animal costumes and many more besides. We recommend bringing warm clothing for afterwards and a hat for while you’re in the water.

We carefully monitor the weather, temperature and conditions in the lead up to the event to ensure it is safe for participants. We ask people to register beforehand so we can contact you in the event we have to cancel.

Our team of volunteers maintain safety on the shore and we have a safety boat in the water monitoring dippers.

Other ways you can support us
