The team at Calvert Stables, the British Horse Society and RDA-approved riding centre on the outskirts of Keswick, recently announced with deep sadness the passing of Max, one of the stables’ most cherished horses.
Max was much loved by staff, volunteers, riders, and visitors for his gentle nature, reliability, and his ability to comfort riders of all abilities. For many years he played an important role providing accessible riding, mindful grooming and trap-driving programs at Calvert Stables, helping to build confidence and bring joy to thousands of people throughout the last 11 years.
Calvert Stables Manager, Lou Hogan, said:
“Max was more than a horse — he was a friend, a teacher and a companion to everyone who met him. His calm temperament and willing spirit made him particularly special with riders new to horses or those seeking therapeutic connection. He will be dearly missed by the staff, volunteers and locals here.”
The team at Calvert Stables notes that Max’s passing was peaceful on Tuesday 9th December. Veterinary care was provided, and the decision to let him rest was made with his welfare and comfort in mind.
Max’s contribution to the stables extended beyond riding sessions; he formed deep bonds with members of the local community and played a valuable role in fundraising and events. His presence was a source of strength and inspiration for many participants, families, volunteers and staff alike.
One Calvert Stables regular rider said:
“In every session and every quiet moment in the field, Max shared a special kind of kindness. He taught patience, resilience and trust — lessons that will stay with us all.”
Calvert Stables invites friends, riders, volunteers and supporters who knew and loved Max to share memories and tributes on its social media channels in the coming weeks.
