Today, Wednesday 16 October, a Penrith primary school welcomed some very special visitors.
Miniature Shetland therapy ponies, Tess and Drummer from Calvert Stables in Keswick heard that Hunter Hall on the outskirts of Penrith were doing lots of interesting learning around how to look after their wellbeing and wanted to find out more.
The two little ponies were accompanied by Lou, Rosie and Becky. They spent a happy hour meeting Hunter Hall pupils from all years – Reception right through Year 6. The children asked plenty of questions, eager to learn how to look after Tess and Drummer and even had a chance to give them a much-appreciated groom.
At the end of the session, the Calvert Stables team were delighted to learn that as a token of thanks, the school have gifted the pair a waterproof rug each from the charity’s Amazon Wishlist, making sure that both Tess and Drummer are well-prepared for the colder months to come.
Stables Manager, Lou Hogan commented:
“What a lovely morning we’ve all had! It’s wonderful to be able to bring Tess and Drummer out into the community and brighten people’s day. As therapy ponies, they’re extremely patient and used to being around people.
It’s a well-known fact that horses and ponies have a hugely beneficial effect on human wellbeing. It’s so good to be able to bring them into schools and settings that recognise the importance of this and are so clearly keen to keep wellbeing front and centre on a daily basis.”
Tess and Drummer are part of the 12-strong herd at Calvert Stables – each pony carefully chosen to ensure they have the right temperament for the job, and specially trained to safely carry and respond to riders both with and without disabilities.
Part of the Lake District Calvert Trust, Calvert Stables is a British Horse Society and Riding for the Disabled Association approved riding establishment. Their dedicated team provide accessible riding and trap driving for residential and community riders and have found that horses (and instructors) provide a little bit of magic for both guests and participants.
