Meet some of the inspirational people who visit us
We’re lucky to meet so many incredible people here at Calvert Lakes. They are what inspires us to come to work every day wanting to do more, wanting to instigate change and to challenge the societal perception of disability. Living with disability is hard. If we can provide moments of ambition, achievement and joy, and open up the world even for just a short amount of time, then we’ve done our job. For 50 years we’ve been helping break down barriers, push boundaries and precipitating real, lasting change. Scroll on to find out how Calvert Lakes has impacted some of our most memorable guests.
The Farrell family have been coming to Calvert Lakes since 2017 and sometimes visit several times throughout the year. Their two children have autism and Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS), and Alice struggles with anxiety. Staying here and spending time together at Calvert Lakes ensures that both children are comfortable and allows their parents to relax, safe in the knowledge that they’re in a supportive and friendly environment.
The Voysey family love coming to Calvert Lakes because our place enables Oliver, their son, to go from ‘existing to living’. Here they can spend quality time together and enjoy adaptive experiences unavailable elsewhere. Oliver has cerebral palsy, epilepsy, autism and learning difficulties. He is also a permeant wheelchair user. At Calvert her can canoe, climb, swing, get out into the Lakes and fly down a zip wire.
Alice and Elizabeth met at Calvert Lakes on a visit with their families. They stayed in touch after their first visit and remain friends and pen pals. Each understands how unique Calvert Lakes is for people living with disabilities and they enjoy spending time here trying new activities.
As a specialised activity centre for people with disabilities, Calvert Lakes is bursting with opportunities to try new things, meet new people and challenge disability to experience ambition and achievement. From our residential activity holidays to visit our hydrotherapy swimming pool, we welcome visitors from far and wide, of all abilities.
We’re committed to making our activity breaks accessible to as many people as possible, which is why limited bursary funding is available to help reduce the cost. Because our funding is often restricted, we prioritise those who’d most benefit from financial assistance. While we cannot guarantee support for every enquiry, we encourage anyone facing financial barriers to get in touch. Our team is here to guide you through the process and help you explore the options available.
