Great fun for people of all ages and abilities
At our outdoor activity centre, water sports are great fun for people of all ages and abilities. Calvert Lakes overlooks Bassenthwaite Lake and just a short distance from the centre is our well-equipped boathouse. From here we take groups out on the water to try canoeing, dingy sailing, group sailing, water confidence and swimming – all set to a stunning backdrop of wooded hills and mountains.
In addition to water sports on Bassenthwaite Lake, we moor a 7m (23ft) catamaran on Lake Windermere, giving you the chance to explore not one, but two iconic Lake District lakes. Sailing is a wonderful experience and a great way to spend time outdoors. The sensation of moving on the water, feeling the wind and navigating are great for people with mental, physical and sensory disabilities. Water sports are the most popular activity we offer because of the sensory benefits of being on the water, and the ability to adapt activities to suit a wide range of needs.
From weighted double- and single-handed dinghies to Canadian canoes, canoe rafts, kayaks and group sailing boats, our fleet enables even those with profound disabilities to experience life on the water. For those with limited mobility, we have portable hoists and a wide range of adaptive seating to ensure everyone is comfortable in a boat. The instructors encourage everyone to participate, whether that’s giving directions, using a paddle, steering the vessel or pulling ropes to control the sails. More active guests can enjoy water polo, canoe races, games and raft building for an extra challenge.
Water sports require groups to work together, build strength through physical activity and build confidence by trying an activity that challenges individuals boundaries.

Of course! With an average group size of 10 people, we would have two qualified instructors out in the boats with the group and an additional instructor in a specially adapted safety boat, if needed. The ratio of staff to guests depends on the size and ability of the group, and occasionally there will be more or less than this. The safety of guests is our highest priority, and all sailing and canoeing instructors are fully qualified, first aid trained and very experienced at taking groups of all abilities out on the water.
Yes – most likely! Spray from the lake, water from paddles and rain all have the potential to ensure you get a little bit wet. But don’t worry, we have waterproof outer layers and buoyancy aids you can wear to keep you safe and warm and dry underneath. And you’re welcome to jump in and swim any time you like!
We have a recommended kit list we send to guests before their stay. We recommend plenty of layers so you can shed or add clothing as you need it. Waterproofs and buoyancy aids are essential, and we can supply these if you don’t have them.
Our catamaran is moored at Ambleside YHA on the northern tip of Lake Windermere. From the centre, it takes approximately 40 minutes by minibus to get there.
Sailing on Windermere is usually a full day activity and we often stop for lunch at a café or take a packed lunch with us. Watersports on Bassenthwaite can be a morning or afternoon activity, depending on the needs of a group, and can be combined with bushcraft activities, water games and swimming, depending on the weather.
We’re committed to making our activity breaks accessible to as many people as possible, which is why limited bursary funding is available to help reduce the cost. Because our funding is often restricted, we prioritise those who’d most benefit from financial assistance. While we cannot guarantee support for every enquiry, we encourage anyone facing financial barriers to get in touch. Our team is here to guide you through the process and help you explore the options available.
