Combining gross and fine motor skills

Archery at Calvert Lakes

Archery is one of the most popular inclusive activities at Calvert Lakes. Combining gross and fine motor skills, this activity is adaptable so those living with physical, learning and sensory disabilities can build confidence while participating fully in a safe and supportive environment.

The archery range sits towards the top of the site and enjoys stunning views of Dodd Wood as a backdrop with Bassenthwaite Lake sprawling out below. Accessed via steps or a gently sloping ramp from the main site, this activity can be adapted for a wide range of needs, focusing on what people can do and celebrating achievement with fun challenges.

Our experienced team guide participants through the fundamental elements of archery teaching about the equipment, technique and how to aim and release. Once the basics have been mastered, challenge activities can be introduced such as attaching homemade targets or balloons to target butt. Archery games, like making pizza by targeting certain colours, ensure everyone remains engaged and motivated and we’re confident all participants will have a successful hit under their belt by the end of each session!

Archery FAQs

Take a look at our most frequently asked questions.

Who can enjoy archery?

Most people can enjoy archery in some form. Anyone who can press a trigger or activate a button should be able to take aim and potentially hit a target. We can adapt distances, string tension and bow types to ensure that even those with severely restricted mobility can experience aiming and firing.

Our archery range is onsite and is often enjoyed as a morning or afternoon session for residential groups. Access is via a short flight of wide steps with handrails or a longer sloping ramp from the middle of the main centre complex. The range sits above and behind the main Farmhouse and pool building.

An archery session lasts no longer than 2 hours, depending on the needs of an activity group. Many groups get very competitive and enjoy progressively harder challenges, depending on ability. Others may find a few shots is plenty so the session time can be much shorter than this.

With all our activities, we work with the needs of each individual group to ensure maximum enjoyment and benefit for all.

Yes! If you have a stay planned and would like to bring your own drawings, photos or homemade targets to attach to the target butts, go for it.

Funding for adventure breaks

We’re committed to making our activity breaks accessible to as many people as possible, which is why limited bursary funding is available to help reduce the cost. Because our funding is often restricted, we prioritise those who’d most benefit from financial assistance. While we cannot guarantee support for every enquiry, we encourage anyone facing financial barriers to get in touch. Our team is here to guide you through the process and help you explore the options available.
